Student Dress Code The purpose of the dress code is to facilitate education, not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire or appearance. Students should be clean and neatly dressed in a manner that is decent, not hazardous to the health or safety of students and does not disrupt or distract from the educational program. The following are more specific elements of the Portola Middle School dress code:
- Clothing must be appropriate to promote a positive school environment.
- Clothing should be neat and clean.
- No article of clothing or jewelry, which is in conflict with health and safety concerns, may be worn.
- Shoes must be enclosed or have a closed toe with a heel back or heel strap.
- No see-through, mesh, or sleeveless shirts, tube tops, tank tops, shirts with spaghetti straps, leotards, pajamas or clothing showing bare midriff or undergarments may be worn.
- Dresses, skirts, or shorts must reach the fingertips when arms are held at sides and fingertips are extended downward. Shirts must be long enough so that when the arms are raised the midriff is covered. Undergarments may not show when student leans forward.
- No skin tight and/or revealing clothing may be worn.
- No caps, hats, sweatbands, hoods, hair picks, bandanas, hairnets, curlers, shower caps or headgear of any kind are permitted. (Exception: Portola approved sun hat which may be purchased at the student store) Sweatbands may only be worn in the designated physical education area and must be removed when leaving the area.
- No oversized clothing is permitted. All pants must be worn at the waist and may be no more than 2” larger than waist size and no longer than ½” above the ground. Hip huggers may be worn ONLY if they conform to all other provisions of the dress code.
- Pants must be hemmed with no split seams, pins, staples, holes or frayed edges.
- No gang related apparel, such as white T-shirts, baggy pants or Dickies, gloves, jewelry, long belts, gang symbols or writing is permitted. No article of clothing or paraphernalia that symbolizes, characterizes or depicts profanity, sex, violence, tobacco products, drugs, or alcohol is permitted.
